Short Description: Petite art deco gem with top-notch espresso and killer baked goods.
Long Description: Commissary is located in a former film storage/distribution building, and they pay homage to their history with understated art deco decor and (really tasty) sandwiches named for dead starlets. The bright, airy space contains plenty of black and gold details and milk glass light fixtures shaped like upside-down retro skyscrapers. Lead pane windows peak onto a courtyard crowned in grape vines, and their sexy mint-green espresso machine made me feel things I’ve never felt for an inanimate object. I could hang out here forever, especially thanks to the fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies and expertly crafted coffee. When I visited, their wi-fi password was a nod to Betty White, so, like, what the fuck else could you possibly want? (Pro tip: take the streetcar if you can. Traffic’s a bitch in this neighborhood, and parking is free but scarce.)
